10 Things to Do Before You Get Swine Flu - Swine flu is out there; are you ready?

The H1N1 flu, commonly called swine flu, is expected to make many people sick this flu season. And if you're one of them, you're in for some serious at-home time, recovering and sparing other people from your germs. To make that time a little easier on yourself, consider taking these 10 steps now, before you come down with swine flu.

1. Make a backup plan. Let's say you get sick, or you need to take care of someone with swine flu. What's your plan for missing work, college, or school? Do you know your company's flu leave policy? If you're in school, how will you keep up with class work? Ask now, so you're not surprised later.

2. Butter up your friends. You might need them as a "flu buddy" to help out while you're down with swine flu, especially if you live alone. If your social network has thinned, bolster it now.

3. Bolster your flu supply stockpile. How are you set for tissues and fever-reducing medicines? Do you have a thermometer to check your temperature? Don't forget about liquids so that you stay hydrated. And if you choose to use face masks if you get sick and can't avoid close contact with other people, remember that each face mask should only be used once, not over and over again.

4. Stock up on comfort foods. Check the fridge, pantry, and stack of order-in menus. Stock up on those special foods that comfort you when you're not feeling well -- tea, chicken noodle soup, crackers -- whatever works for you. The last thing you're going to feel like doing when you get swine flu is grocery shopping.

5. Be good to your hands. Even if you don't get swine flu, you'll be washing your hands a lot to help prevent catching it. Treat yourself to a really nice soap or gel, and lotion, too. You'll be lathering up a lot, so leave your hands feeling good, not raw, afterward.

6. Stock up on DVDs and books. But don't select ones that need tons of concentration. You're going to feel pretty rocky with swine flu, so it's not the time to tackle War and Peace.

7. Know your risk. Pregnant women, children and young adults, and people of any age with a chronic medical condition (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease) are more likely to have severe illness from swine flu. Read about swine flu and pregnancy and swine flu and chronic conditions, and be swift to seek care if you come down with flu-like symptoms.

8. Dig out your tape measure. If you get swine flu, you should stay at least 6 feet away from others to help them avoid getting sick. Check out how far away that is.

9. Put your doctor on speed dial. Nothing personal, but unless you've got a severe case or are a high-risk patient, they'd rather you didn't just show up in their offices, spreading your germs. Call ahead first; you might not need to come in.

10. Know when it's an emergency. Most cases of swine flu have been mild. But there have been hospitalizations and deaths, too. Learn the danger signs and seek immediate medical care if they arise. Children should get medical attention if they:

Have fast breathing or trouble breathing
Have bluish or gray skin color
Are not drinking enough fluid
Are not waking up or not interacting
Have severe or persistent vomiting
Are so irritable that the child does not want to be held
Have flu-like symptoms that improve but then return with fever and a worse cough
Have fever with a rash
Have a fever and then have a seizure or sudden mental or behavioral change
Adults should seek urgent medical attention if they have:

Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
Sudden dizziness
Confusion
Severe or persistent vomiting
Flu-like symptoms that improve but then come back with worsening fever or cough

Shanghai's First Serious A/H1N1 Flu Victim Critical

BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- The first serious victim of A/H1N1 flu in Shanghai is in a critical condition and suffering from multiple organ failure, doctors said.

The 35-year-old migrant worker is in a coma at Shanghai No. 1 People's Hospital in Songjiang District, but his temperature and blood pressure are stable, infectious disease expert Dr. Lu Hongzhou was quoted as saying by Monday's Shanghai Daily.

Five experts from the Ministry of Health are in Shanghai to help local doctors treat the patient, who fell ill last Thursday with severe symptoms and was having difficulty breathing.

The man was confirmed as contracting A/H1N1 on Friday. Apart from obesity, the patient has no other complicating factors, Lu said.

Most deaths from A/H1N1 flu are among the very young and middle-aged people. "That's because those groups have a strong immune system, which reacts more actively to the A/H1N1 virus," Lusaid. "A hard fight between virus and immune system can result in greater damage."

More than 100 people across China were infected with A/H1N1 fluover the weekend, a clear signal that its peak season has begun, Zeng Guang, a senior epidemiologist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, was quoted as saying by Monday's China Daily.

Mass outbreaks mainly affecting students have led to the closure of more than 20 schools stretching from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in the south to Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in the northwest, just one week after the start of the new school term.

A Shanghai-made A/H1N1 vaccine will be evaluated by the State Food and Drug Administration on Thursday, its final hurdle before being officially licensed for production, officials from the Shanghai Institute of Biological Products said.

The institute's vice director, Wang Menglian, said the vaccine is in line to be the third approved by the FDA. Sinovac Biotech Ltd. in Beijing and Hualan Biological Engineering Inc. in Henan, have already received licenses to produce A/H1N1 vaccine.

The Chinese mainland had reported 4,415 cases of A/H1N1 flu, ofwhich 3,577 had recovered, the Health Ministry said Friday evening. No deat hs had been reported.

Globally, the disease had killed about 2,000 people and infected more than 180,000 in more than 170 countries.

Should I get tested for HIV?

Should I get tested for HIV?

The following are behaviors that increase your chances of getting HIV. If you answer yes to any of them, you should definitely get an HIV test. If you continue with any of these behaviors, you should be tested every year. Talk to a health care provider about an HIV testing schedule that is right for you.

• Have you injected drugs or steroids or shared equipment (such as needles, syringes, works) with others?

• Have you had unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex with men who have sex with men, multiple partners, or anonymous partners?

• Have you exchanged sex for drugs or money?

• Have you been diagnosed with or treated for hepatitis, tuberculosis (TB), or a sexually transmitted disease (STD), like syphilis?

• Have you had unprotected sex with someone who could answer yes to any of the above questions?

If you have had sex with someone whose history of sex partners and/or drug use is unknown to you or if you or your partner has had many sex partners, then you have more of a chance of being infected with HIV. Both you and your new partner should get tested for HIV, and learn the results, before having sex for the first time.

For women who plan to become pregnant, testing is even more important. If a woman is infected with HIV, medical care and certain drugs given during pregnancy can lower the chance of passing HIV to her baby. All women who are pregnant should be tested during each pregnancy.

How long after a possible exposure should I wait to get tested for HIV?

Most HIV tests are antibody tests that measure the antibodies your body makes against HIV. It can take some time for the immune system to produce enough antibodies for the antibody test to detect, and this time period can vary from person to person. This time period is commonly referred to as the “window period.” Most people will develop detectable antibodies within 2 to 8 weeks (the average is 25 days). Even so, there is a chance that some individuals will take longer to develop detectable antibodies. Therefore, if the initial negative HIV test was conducted within the first 3 months after possible exposure, repeat testing should be considered >3 months after the exposure occurred to account for the possibility of a false-negative result. Ninety-seven percent of persons will develop antibodies in the first 3 months following the time of their infection. In very rare cases, it can take up to 6 months to develop antibodies to HIV.

Another type of test is an RNA test, which detects the HIV virus directly. The time between HIV infection and RNA detection is 9–11 days. These tests, which are more costly and used less often than antibody tests, are used in some parts of the United States.

Influenza A (H1N1) Q&A / 甲型流感病毒(H1N1)问 答

Influenza A (H1N1) Q&A

What is influenza A (H1N1)?

Influenza A (H1N1) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses that causes regular outbreaks in pigs. People do not normally get H1N1, but human infections can and do happen. Influenza A (H1N1) viruses have been reported to spread from person-to-person, but in the past, this transmission was limited and not sustained beyond three people.

What are the symptoms?

Limited information is available at this stage. It appears that the early symptoms are similar to seasonal flu - cough, fever, sore throat, headache, runny nose, general fatigue, and muscle pains. Some patients have also had vomiting and diarrhea. Severe cases have progressed quickly (within 5 days) to a pneumonia-like illness, which involves shortness of breath and difficulty breathing.

If you or your family experience these types of symptoms, it is important to stay home from work or school and to seek medical care, in particular, if you have recently traveled to the affected areas of if you have difficulty breathing.

How is this influenza A (H1N1) spreading?

It is most likely spreading from person to person in the same way other flu viruses spread: through infectious respiratory droplets (droplets released when a person coughs, sneezes or talks). If these get into a healthy person's nose or mouth, they can get infected.

Sometimes people get infected when they touch something with flu virus on it and then touch their mouth or nose. Flu virus can live on shared objects (doorknobs, keyboards, counters, etc).

Can I catch influenza A (H1N1) from eating pork or pork products?

No. 不会

How can I prevent from getting sick?

It is important to follow specific precautions to reduce the chance of acquiring or spreading the virus:

采取针对性的预防措施,降低患病或传染病毒的几率十分重要:

Ø         Frequent hand washing with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand gel

Ø         Covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing, preferably with a tissue

Ø         Washing hands after coughing or sneezing

Ø         Avoiding crowded areas when possible

Ø         Wearing a surgical mask may be appropriate to prevent transmission to others and yourself

Ø         Refrain from touching your face, and if you do, make sure your hands are clean

Do you have any immunization to cover influenza A (H1N1)?

There is no specific vaccine against this influenza A (H1N1). Regular seasonal flu vaccine is unlikely to provide protection against this strain. Nevertheless, those who have not had a seasonal flu vaccine should consider doing so while supplies last.

Can I get flu vaccine to prevent influenza A (H1N1)?

The current flu vaccine does not cover the influenza A (H1N1). If you have any questions about the flu vaccine, please consult with your physician.

I want to have some Tamiflu. How can I get some?

Tamiflu is a prescription medication and supply is limited.  CDC is providing Tamiflu for confirmed or suspected case of influenza. Please consult with your local CDC if you need additional information.

How long can an infected person spread influenza A (H1N1) to others?

People with influenza A (H1N1) virus infection should be considered potentially contagious as long as they are symptomatic and possible for up to 7 days following illness onset. Children, especially younger children, might potentially be contagious for longer periods.

What surfaces are most likely to be sources of contamination?

Germs can be spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth. Droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person move through the air. Germs can be spread when a person touches respiratory droplets from another person on a surface like a desk and then touches their own eyes, mouth or nose before washing their hands.

How long can viruses live outside the body?

We know that some viruses and bacteria can live 2 hours or longer on surfaces like cafeteria tables, doorknobs, and desks. Frequent hand washing will help you reduce the chance of getting contamination from these common surfaces.

what do we know about swine flu?

April 21, 2009 -- Two California children have come down with a mysterious new strain of swine flu virus -- even though they had no contact with pigs or each other.

What do we know about swine flu? follow contents may help you:

What Is Swine Flu?
Like humans, pigs get the flu. Four different type A swine flu strains commonly circulate among pigs. Most recent swine flu viruses have belonged to the H1N1 and H3N2 subtypes. Pigs typically get sick but usually don't die from swine flu.

Do Humans Get Swine Flu?
Normally, swine flu bugs don't infect people. Historically, there's a case every year or two in the U.S. among people who have contact with live pigs.

But from December 2005 to January 2009 there was an uptick in swine flu cases. There were 12 human swine flu infections during this time. Eleven of these people had direct or indirect contact with pigs; in the twelfth case it was not known whether there was pig contact.

It's possible this uptick was due to improved reporting systems, but the CDC says "genetic changes in swine flu viruses and other factors might also be a factor."

Can Swine Flu Spread From Person to Person?
The two California children appear to have had no contact with pigs. That makes it more likely that they got swine flu from another, as yet unknown, source. Before they fell ill, both kids had family members who had flu-like illnesses. Unfortunately, no virus samples were obtained from these people. Fortunately, all of them got better -- including the two children with proven swine flu.

Have There Been Previous Swine Flu Outbreaks?
If swine flu sounds familiar to you, it's probably because you remember or have read about the 1976 swine flu outbreak at Fort Dix, N.J., among military recruits. It lasted about a month and then went away as mysteriously as it appeared. As many as 240 people were infected; one died.

The swine flu that spread at Fort Dix was the H1N1 strain. That's the same flu strain that caused the disastrous flu pandemic of 1918-1919, resulting in tens of millions of deaths.

Concern that a new H1N1 pandemic might return with winter led to a crash program to create a vaccine and to vaccinate all Americans against swine flu. That vaccine program ran into all kinds of problems -- not the least of which was public perception that the vaccine caused excessive rates of dangerous reactions. After more than 40 million people were vaccinated, the effort was abandoned.

As it turned out, there was no swine flu epidemic.

I Got a Flu Shot. Am I Protected Against Swine Flu?
No. There is no swine flu vaccine.

It's possible that the seasonal flu vaccine might provide partial protection against H3N2 swine flu bugs. But the strain that appeared in California is the H1N1 swine flu strain. It is very different from the H1N1 human flu strain included in the seasonal flu vaccine.

About HIV - Fast Way to Determine HIV 1/2 in Shanghai

  • There are two main forms of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 was discovered in 1983 at the Institute Pasteur in Paris and HIV-2 was first discovered amongst patients in Cameroon in 1985. HIV-2 is less virulent than HIV-1, usually not resulting in full blown AIDS, but nevertheless is still fatal.
  • By infecting and gradually destroying the immune system, HIV reduces the body’s protection against cancers, pneumonia and other infections that can take hold and lead to death.
  • Initially someone living with HIV may not display any symptoms of the infection because their immune system can control it at first, but ultimately drug support will be required. Anti-HIV drugs can help the immune system and keep the HIV infection under control, but cannot completely rid the body of HIV infection.
  • “Knowledge of HIV status is the gateway to combating AIDS”
Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS
  • A growing epidemic…over 40 million people are living with aids…around 5 million people were newly infected in 2005…over 3 million people died.
(Aids Epidemic Update, December 2005, UNAIDS)
  • Sub-Saharan Africa
Just over 10% of the world’s population, but home to more than 60% of all people living with HIV – 25.8 million.
In 2005, an estimated 3.2 million people in the region became newly infected, while 2.4 million adults and children died of AIDS.
By 2010 an estimated 18 million children in sub-Saharan Africa alone will be orphaned by HIV/AIDS.
  • Asia
In 2005, approximately 8.3 million people were living with HIV, including 1.1 million who became newly infected in the past 12 months. Over 500,000 people died from the disease in 2005.
  • Eastern Europe & Central Asia
The number of people living with HIV was estimated at 1.6 million in 2005. Around three quarters of new infections reported between 2000 and 2004 were in people under 30 (compared to 33% in Western Europe).
  • Latin America
The number of people living with HIV was estimated at 1.8 million in 2005.

Shanghai American School

Shanghai American School exemplifies the phrase "one system, two schools" with two immense campuses located at the far corners of Puxi and Pudong. Both side of campuses a beacon and a target-a beacon in terms of high quality education and a target for other schools around the country.

SAS is a school system that is seeking to compete with top tier international schools around the world. It has the advantage of newness-purpose-built buildings at Chinese casts-and a very American style of innovation. SAS is a place where change is constant-a philosophy that percolates down to students through administrators and teachers who have the time to adapt the best teaching and learning methods. In one class, a student talks about demonstrating understanding through a variety of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic means. On a white board in the Guidance and Learning Support Room, we see a chart describing different ways to assess competence in language. Clearly the fruits of Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory have become internalized at SAS.

British International School Shanghai

The polish of British manners and curriculum, with management that pushes the envelope in finding the best practices in education. There are many options for families wishing to enroll their kids in the UK National Curriculum in Shanghai. The two British International School Shanghai campuses are products of Nord Anglia Education PLC, a publicly traded corporation focusing on international schools and other educational and training products around the world. The commoditization and packaging of education as such represents a new trend worldwide. As one of the fastest growing and most profitable market around, it's no surprise that Shanghai has become a center for such development. From the perspective of consumers, Nord Anglia delivers a product of consistently high quality and "British polish," towing the line toted by Nord Anglia Chairman Kevin McNeany in 2003: "Each school is based on the excellent perception of British education. We emphasize its overall quality, the high standards of good behavior, the well turned out children, their very good manners and ultimately their academic success."

Yew Chung Shanghai International School

YCIS is undoubtedly the best school in China for foreign students to learn high-level Chinese while maintaining top-notch Western benchmarks. Yew Chung International School may well be the leading bilingual School in Asia today, with campus in Hong Kong, Beijing, Chongqing and Shanghai. But characterizing YCIS as merely another "bilingual institution" would do it a disservice. It is groundbreaking in many ways. For instance, YCIS currently uses the UK National Curriculum, modified for an international focus, for teaching foreigners Chinese-language skills. It is also an international Baccalaureate Diploma Program school and a leader in the new concept of "global education," a fitting moniker given the incredible breadth of ambitions and achievements at the unique school.

Dulwich College Shanghai

A complete British School experience, Dulwich has the universal appeal of Harry Potter's Hogwarts School.

Dulwich College Shanghai opened in 2003, located on the East side of Shanghai in Pudong, about 16km from the city centre. It is a flourishing all through kindergarten–primary-secondary school that provides a top quality education for approximately 1100 students from Toddler to Year 13.  The College follows an enhanced English National Curriculum, prepares students for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) in Years 10 and 11and follows the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) at Post 16. At all ages the Curriculum is modified and adapted to suit the diverse international student body.

In 2006 the College completed a major building and renovation program that now provides all three schools (DUCKS, Junior School and Senior School) with the most outstanding facilities. All the classrooms are designed to be age appropriate and the latest Information Communication Technology (ICT) resources are available to be integrated into the learning and teaching at all levels.

A Dulwich College education, however, is far more than what happens in the classroom, no matter how important that might be. Dulwich College Shanghai offers a full range of co-curricular activities and educational visits throughout the year and the students distinguish themselves by their involvement in the extensive Performing Arts and Sports programs. These activities are supported by excellent facilities –sports hall, gymnasium, playing fields, state-of-the-art theatre and purpose built music recital and practice rooms.

It is not, however, just superb facilities that make an outstanding school. The staff embodies a wide range of experience and a wealth of enthusiasm. The parents are tremendously supportive and contribute a huge amount of time and energy to College events. The students throughout the College are a real delight to teach and have a genuine appetite for learning.

Livingston American School

Livingston makes American college a realistic possibility for non-English speakers
In 1995 former US Representative Bob Livingston asked the Chinese authorities to let five "American" schools be opened in cities with US consulates. The first and only one so far, Livingston American School, is in Shanghai. The school opened several years ago, originally functioning mostly as an international school. Shanghai Livingston American School is a private, co-educational, pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade international school. their curriculum and instructional practices are modeled on the California School System. Staffed with experienced and accredited teachers, it is currently the only international school in Shanghai following the American system. With the exception of foreign language study, all classes are conducted in English.

Jin Cai High School (International Division)

Jin Cai now offers both a Chinese curriculum for no-PRC-Chinese and an English language IB program. Jin Cai High School may be the most beautiful Chinese school in Shanghai, with an elegant marble entry designed in a post-modern Chinese architecture. In a new tradition that hints at the strong financial ties across the Straits, a successful Taiwanese business man whose father was from Shanghai donated the school to the city. A few kilometers away in much less resplendent buildings are the international division of Jin Cai. For students wishing to develop strong Chinese language skills, Jin Cai provides an excellent option.

Shanghai High School (International Division)

Facilities at the school are second to none, with amazing science areas decked out with a myriad of cutting-edge scientific equipment. Shanghai High School is the quintessential magnet school in China much like Bronx High School of Science in the US. It produces an extraordinary number of Intel Science Scholars and International Math Olympiad gold medalists. Moreover, an astounding 60% of its graduates go on to the top four Chinese universities: Beida, Tsinghua, Fudan and Jiaotong. Facilities at the school are second to none, with amazing science areas decked out with scanning tunneling microscopes, gas chromatographs and a nanotechnology materials laboratory. The elegantly landscaped grounds and nicely appointed buildings are reminiscent of an Ivy League college. So it goes without saying that top students from all over China apply to get in to SHS. Unfortunately, less than 10% are admitted.
